Frequently asked questions about large-format porcelain tiles

What are CORE, ORION, LUMEN, TITAN, ECLIPSE, COMET and IRITECH?

CORE, ORION, LUMEN, TITAN, ECLIPSE, COMET and IRITECH are manufacturing and finishing technologies developed by XTONE to add depth, texture, relief, visual effects or specific properties to its large-format porcelain stoneware surfaces. They form part of ‘The Texture Revolution’ concept, an area of work that sets XTONE apart through its research into design, tactility and surface realism.

CORE creates a full-body effect by integrating decorative particles into the body of the porcelain tile, generating greater visual depth and a more natural appearance of the material.

ORION extends the design and continuous veining across the entire tile, providing greater dimensionality and reinforcing the sense of continuity of the material in large-format applications.

LUMEN incorporates decorative indented reliefs in selected areas of the design, adding realism, detail and visual richness to the surface.

TITAN introduces metallic hues to the porcelain tile, creating surfaces with an industrial, contemporary and sophisticated appearance.

ECLIPSE provides textural depth and selective 3D relief, allowing the surface to be perceived with greater volume, detail and tactility.

COMET incorporates shimmering particles that create a luminous or sparkling effect depending on the incidence of light and the viewing angle.

IRITECH gives the surface a photoluminescent effect: the tile passively absorbs light and gradually emits it in the dark, enabling the creation of ambient effects or the marking of pathways without the need for an electrical power supply.

Does XTONE contain resins?

XTONE porcelain stoneware is not based on organic resins like other surface materials. Its mineral composition and high-temperature firing process result in a stable, compact surface that is suitable for use in kitchens, bathrooms, interior design, façades and furniture. This distinction is significant when compared with alternative materials such as quartz or surfaces containing resinous components.

In what formats is XTONE available?

XTONE is available in large-format porcelain tiles designed for a range of project applications. The range includes sizes such as 160 x 320 cm and 160 x 160 cm, suitable for wall cladding, flooring, worktops, furniture, bathrooms, façades and architectural solutions.

Furthermore, XTONE is conceived as a large-format raw material that can be transformed by specialist professionals to suit the requirements of each project. Starting with the original slab, the material can be cut, machined and adapted to different dimensions to create worktops, tables, furniture, bathroom fittings, bespoke cladding or customised architectural solutions.

For large-scale projects, particularly those exceeding 1,000 m², XTONE can assess the feasibility of manufacturing in special sizes that best suit the project’s requirements. This option allows for optimised cutting plans, improved installation efficiency and minimised material waste.

How is XTONE large-format porcelain tile manufactured?

XTONE porcelain tiles are manufactured from natural mineral raw materials which are pressed, decorated using high-definition digital technology and fired at high temperatures. This industrial process results in a compact, durable surface with low water absorption and a wide variety of designs, finishes and textures. The CORE, ORION, LUMEN, TITAN, ECLIPSE, COMET and IRITECH technologies form part of XTONE’s technological and creative language under the concept ‘The Texture Revolution’.

How do XTONE’s polished finishes differ?

XTONE’s polished finishes are produced using a dry-grit polishing process, applying approximately 1 to 2 kg per m² of tile. This system allows the surface to be worked more uniformly and precisely, achieving a mirror finish, greater visual flatness and improved scratch resistance in line with the standards for large-format polished porcelain tiles.

Unlike other polishing systems based on gels or surface treatments, the XTONE process involves controlled mechanical grinding. This helps to achieve a flatter surface, with greater aesthetic depth and a cleaner reflection of the gloss, which is particularly important for worktops, wall cladding, tables and applications where light falls directly onto the surface.

Is XTONE stain-resistant?

Yes. The low absorbency of XTONE porcelain tiles makes it difficult for common liquids such as coffee, wine, oil or fruit juices to penetrate the surface. To keep the material in good condition, we recommend cleaning up stains as soon as possible using water, a soft cloth and a neutral detergent, and consulting the cleaning guide for stubborn stains or construction residue.

In what thicknesses is XTONE available?

XTONE is available in a range of thicknesses to meet the technical and aesthetic requirements of each application within the large-format porcelain tile range.

The 3.5 mm thickness is designed for lightweight wall cladding and furniture applications. The 6 mm thickness is intended for wall cladding, façades and flooring. For flooring with a non-slip finish, XTONE offers 10 mm options. The 12 mm option is suitable for worktops and façades, whilst the 20 mm option is particularly recommended for worktops and applications requiring greater thickness, robustness and a striking material presence.

The choice of thickness will depend on the intended use, the installation system, the technical requirements and the desired visual result. Before specifying a product, it is advisable to consult the technical data sheet for each collection to confirm the thickness, finish and recommended use.

What technical advantages does XTONE offer?

XTONE offers the characteristics typical of high-performance large-format porcelain tiles: low water absorption, stain resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance (depending on the finish and technical specifications), light stability, frost resistance and ease of cleaning. These properties make it a suitable surface for residential, commercial and contract projects, as well as high-traffic applications, when specified correctly.

In addition to these technical advantages, XTONE stands out thanks to a combination of factors that add value compared to other large-format surfaces: selected mineral raw materials, Porcelanosa Group’s industrial quality control, a variety of thicknesses, stable performance during installation by specialist professionals, and a range of finishes with a high level of design.

Innovation in textures and finishes is one of XTONE’s key distinguishing features. Technologies such as ECLIPSE, COMET, LUMEN, CORE, ORION, TITAN and IRITECH enable the creation of surfaces with greater visual depth, relief, tactile quality and realism, reinforcing XTONE’s position in worktops, wall cladding, flooring, furniture, tables, façades and contract projects.

In which rooms of the house can XTONE be used?

XTONE can be incorporated into kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways, fireplaces, terraces and outdoor areas. The ability to combine worktops, floor tiles, wall tiles, tables, furniture and special features within the same aesthetic range helps to create homes with greater visual continuity and design coherence.

Does XTONE require any specific long-term maintenance?

XTONE does not require any special maintenance other than regular cleaning with water and a neutral detergent. Its low porosity means there is no need for sealants, waxes or periodic treatments, and it retains its appearance over time despite daily use.

What is XTONE’s graphic continuity?

Graphic continuity is the system that ensures the pattern, veining or visual composition of an XTONE collection remains consistent across large-format porcelain tiles. This feature is particularly important in projects involving large surfaces, worktops, continuous walls, façades, tables or applications where the design of the slab must be read as a complete composition.

Depending on the collection, XTONE can specify graphic continuity using specific codes that indicate how the design continues between tiles: along the short side, along the long side, along both sides simultaneously, with a diagonal offset, or in a bookmatch pattern.

Graphic continuity between tiles may have a maximum deviation of 3 cm. This layout is supplied to order and may incur an additional cost; by default, XTONE slabs are supplied at random, with no guarantee of graphic continuity between tiles.
