Final site clean-up

Once the ceramic tiles have been laid, it is essential to protect them to prevent any damage until the work is completed.

Before carrying out the final cleaning, a reasonable waiting period of 24–48 hours must be observed to allow the grout to set properly. For polished porcelain tiles, once grouted, the tiles must be cleaned with a damp sponge before the grout has set.

As a general rule, acidic products such as Acidnet – Butech are recommended for cleaning cement residue or cementitious grout, provided they do not come into contact with metals and are always diluted. If epoxy products are used for grouting, remove any residue immediately after installation using a sponge and plenty of clean water. Then carry out a thorough clean using alkaline detergents.

For general cleaning, it is advisable to wipe the surface with a cleaning solution, using bio-alcohol or a neutral (ammonia-based) cleaner at the dosage recommended by the manufacturer. Afterwards, it is advisable to use a dry cloth free from waxy additives.

Greater care is required for polished and silk finishes, particularly in plain and light colours; these should be cleaned daily using a slightly damp cloth. To prevent the polished finish from losing its shine over time, it is recommended to use water-based creams (Polishing cream – Faber) with a white scouring pad to restore the material’s original finish.

For the maintenance of wall coverings, it is preferable to use neutral detergents or more specific products. Residue may remain on the surface of the cladding following spills or contact with substances such as paint, oil or coffee.

Recommendations

XTONE recommends using the specific products indicated for each type of stain to achieve the best results. Do not use products containing waxes, particularly on materials with a Silk or Polished finish, as these may cause shadowing.

Products containing muriatic/hydrochloric acid (such as hydrochloric acid) must not be used on metals or steel, as they may cause damage. For any stains that cannot be removed using standard cleaning methods, specific procedures must be followed depending on the nature of the stain.

Frequently asked questions about XTONE resources

What is XTONE?

XTONE is the Porcelanosa Group brand specialising in large-format surfaces for architecture, interior design, kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and contract projects. Its range combines large-format XTONE porcelain tiles and Altissima natural stone, with sizes, thicknesses, finishes and solutions designed for professionals seeking design, technical performance and versatility of application.

What should I do if an XTONE surface gets stained?

If a stain appears, it is advisable to treat it as soon as possible using water, a soft cloth and a neutral cleaner. For stubborn stains such as grease, wine, ink, limescale, rust or building debris, please consult the official XTONE cleaning guide and choose the appropriate method depending on the type of stain and the surface finish.

What do the codes C160, C320, I160, I320, ID320 and BKM mean?

C160: continuity on the short side. C320: continuity on the long side. I160: infinite continuity on the short side. I320: infinite continuity on the long side. ID320: infinite continuity with diagonal offset on the long side. BKM: mirror-matched or book-matched layout. This information helps marble workers, architects and interior designers to plan cut-outs, worktops, cladding and special projects with greater precision.

Which products should not be used on XTONE?

As a general rule, products containing hydrofluoric acid or agents not recommended for technical porcelain tiles should be avoided. For intensive cleaning, construction residues or stubborn stains, it is safest to consult the official XTONE cleaning guide and check compatibility with the specific finish.

How much does an XTONE panel weigh?

The weight of an XTONE slab depends on its size and thickness. As a guide, thinner slabs are easier to use in cladding, furniture or façade applications due to their lower weight, whilst thicker slabs are typically used for worktops, tables, machined components and solutions requiring a more substantial material presence. For structural calculations, transport or installation, the weight specified in the product’s official technical data sheet must always be used.

What is the warranty on XTONE products?

All XTONE products come with a three-year warranty. We also offer an extended 10-year warranty on worktops. To claim this, please complete the form below.

Does XTONE emit formaldehyde or volatile organic compounds?

Due to its mineral composition and firing process, XTONE porcelain tiles perform very well in terms of emissions. Global GreenTag assesses XTONE during both the manufacturing and use phases within the framework of the Product Health Declaration, with recognition for WELL and LEED credits relating to material transparency.

Current indoor air quality certificates, Product Health Declarations and technical documentation available for download provide supporting evidence for this information in architectural, interior design and sustainable construction projects.

What does the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) indicate?

XTONE’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) provides verified environmental information on the life cycle of its 12 mm large-format porcelain tiles, in accordance with ISO 14025 and UNE-EN 15804. This document analyses stages such as raw materials, manufacturing, transport, installation, use, maintenance and end-of-life.

The Environmental Product Declaration enables architects, developers and technical teams to work with traceable environmental data for projects involving sustainability criteria, building certifications or impact assessments. The current version and the exact scope of the declared product must be consulted before incorporating environmental data into a project report.

What certifications and documents support XTONE’s sustainability and health credentials?

XTONE’s technical documentation includes certificates and declarations that help to justify the use of the product in architectural, interior design and sustainable construction projects. These include the Environmental Product Declaration, the Global GreenTag Product Health Declaration, Global GreenTag GreenRate Level A, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 management systems, and references to WELL and LEED criteria, depending on the scope of each certificate.

For projects with environmental criteria, it is recommended that you always check the current version, the product covered, the validity date and the exact scope of each certificate.

How do you clean an XTONE surface?

Cleaning an XTONE surface on a daily basis is straightforward. Normally, all you need is water, a soft cloth and, if necessary, a mild household detergent. XTONE porcelain tiles do not require waxes, sealants or regular treatments, making them easy to maintain in kitchens, bathrooms, on walls, floors, tables and furniture.

What is the mechanical strength of XTONE?

The mechanical strength of XTONE depends on its thickness, size, finish and application. Its slabs are designed to withstand demanding applications such as worktops, flooring, wall cladding, façades and furniture, provided they are selected correctly and installed by qualified professionals. For calculations, processing or installation, please refer to the technical data sheet for each thickness and collection.

Does XTONE need sealing?

No. XTONE porcelain tiles do not require initial sealing or regular maintenance using impregnating agents. Unlike many porous natural stones, their low water absorption means that it is not necessary to apply water-repellent treatments to the porcelain surface. In the case of Altissima natural stone, the specific maintenance recommendations for each material must be followed.

Does Altissima require maintenance?

Yes. Unlike XTONE porcelain tiles, Altissima natural stone requires maintenance tailored to the type of material, finish and application. Some natural stones may require surface protection, cleaning with pH-neutral products and specific care to protect against stains, acids, limescale or harsh products. To preserve the beauty of Altissima, we recommend cleaning the surface with water and mild soap, avoiding acidic or abrasive products, and always following the maintenance instructions for each type of stone. With premium natural stone, proper care is essential for the material’s durability and preservation.

Is XTONE sustainable?

Yes. XTONE approaches sustainability through durability, industrial efficiency, resource recovery and transparency in documentation. Its large-format porcelain stoneware surfaces are manufactured from mineral raw materials and are designed for a long service life in architecture, interior design, kitchens, bathrooms, furniture and contract projects.

The production process incorporates circular economy measures such as the recovery of ceramic sludge and dust, the reuse of process water and the recovery of waste. Over 95% of solid waste is recovered through recycling or internal and external reuse, and production is supported by energy-efficient systems, heat recovery, cogeneration and energy management in accordance with ISO 50001.

Further information can be found in Porcelanosa Group’s sustainability catalogue, *The Green Issue*, which outlines the group’s commitment to industrial efficiency, the circular economy, responsible resource management and the reduction of environmental impact.

What is the service life of an XTONE surface?

An XTONE surface is designed to retain its performance for many years under normal conditions of use, installation and maintenance. The Environmental Product Declaration for XTONE 12 mm takes as its functional unit 1 m² of surface covering over 50 years in a residential property, which reinforces the concept of durability as part of its environmental profile.

Its low water absorption, light stability, heat resistance and ease of cleaning contribute to a long service life in residential, commercial and contract projects. Durability reduces the need for premature replacement and should be considered a key sustainability argument.
